PRE-PRODUCTION

Pre-production is where the record is made. Arrangement, instrumentation, key, tempo, structure, feel — these decisions shape everything that follows. The time spent before the session is the most valuable time in the process.
SoundSmith offers pre-production as a standalone service and as part of a full production engagement. The goal is to arrive at the session with a clear, shared understanding of what the record is trying to do — and how to do it.
TRACKING
Capturing the performance.
The recording environment at SoundSmith was built to capture acoustic instruments and voices with exceptional clarity. The acoustic design, microphone collection, analog front ends, and computer-controlled routing work together to give every performance the best possible chance.
The session is designed around the performer. The room is quiet, the monitoring is accurate, and the workflow is unhurried. The goal is a space where musicians can do their best work — and where the engineer can make the right decisions while the artist is still in the moment.

Creative production at SoundSmith means being a collaborator in the full sense — contributing to arrangement, instrumentation, sonic direction, and the overall shape of the record.
This is not a service that imposes a sound. The goal is to understand what the artist is trying to make and to bring the experience, perspective, and tools to help them make it. The producer's job is to serve the music.
Holbrook Gracia has worked as a producer, engineer, and guitarist across a wide range of styles and contexts. That range informs the work — without defining it.
NETWORK & COLLABORATION
Access to a broader network of musicians and specialists.
SoundSmith has working relationships with a network of musicians, arrangers, and specialists in the Boston area and beyond. When a project calls for additional instrumentation, string arrangements, horn sections, or other contributions, those connections are available.
The network is not a roster. It is a set of trusted working relationships built over years of collaborative work — people whose musicianship and professionalism are known quantities.
LIVE & LOCATION RECORDING
Recording outside the studio.
Not every recording belongs in a studio. Live performances, location recordings, and sessions in unusual acoustic environments require a different approach — and different equipment.
SoundSmith offers location recording services for live performances, events, and sessions where the environment is part of the sound. The same attention to microphone placement, signal chain, and monitoring that defines the studio work applies in the field.
